id's RAGE - no dedicated servers?

John Carmack says that new shooter RAGE probably won't feature the option of dedicated servers.

Luckily for id Software it's Infinity Ward that's blazing the trail and picking up all the bad PR for its refusal to included dedicated server options for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

id Software's John Carmack feels that Infinity Ward will take all the heat for dropping dedicated servers and RAGE won't suffer the same bad rap.

"It's not cast in stone yet, but at this point no, we don't think we will have dedicated servers," Carmack told Variety. "The great thing is we won't have to be a pioneer on that," he added. "We'll see how it works out for everyone else."

What difference does it make if you don't have dedicated servers anyway?

Transfixed, but not dead.

not so much i guess, this game is single player and co-op, as long as the players have a decent connection there shouldn't be any problems, it's just 2-4 people i suppose. not anything to start yelling about really.

Well, dedicated servers can be small hardcore machines in some server rack, running just for your enjoyment.

No dedicated means that people them selves have to host while actually playing the game, normally means more lag, no off-side servers means lesser numbers (players) due to not to many having a 100MBit/s connection at home.

And so on.. Didn't care to much about it before.. But if this is the new slacking style they are going to start with then I'm starting to hate it, though I'm not the big FPS player.

Yeah, what DjeavleN said.

Without dedicated servers you're constantly joining different ones based on your skill/rank, thus killing the sense of community created by a mutually favoured server.

It's a bad move in my opinion. I'm surprised IW has ignored what has proven to be a fundamental part of online games.

the fact that they removed dedicated servers is bad, might be a whole new trend, that could end up leaving PC gaming half dead, because it's basicly the same as consoles and you wont get any extras such as mods and dedicated servers...

not to have dedicated servers in this particular game doesn't bother me though, my connection is just fine and im playing with 3 other people in borderlands on the ps3 rather often, no issues there except loot whores and level 17 morons joing my level 50 2nd playtrough....
