Modern Warfare 2 online store boycott

Some download stores are boycotting the release of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

Download stores such as Impulse, Gamersgate and Direct2Drive will not sell Call of Duty: Modern Warfare when it is released next week because the game forces users to install Valve's Steamworks.

Steamworks is used by the game to handle save games, DRM and installation but it also features Steam's retail element, That retail element has put rival noses out of joint who don't wish to sell a title that will feature software that encourages users to shop elsewhere.

A rep for Direct2Drive told Kotaku that "We don't believe games should force the user to install a Trojan Horse" and that it wouldn't sell games featuring Steamworks until Valve "decoupled its retail marketplace".

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is out next Tuesday.

It does seem like an underhanded thing to do. MW2's developer seems to be shooting more feet than it has available at the moment. Way to go Infinity Ward!

take a look on steam and you'll notice how left 4 dead 2, borderlands and even mass effect (1) is selling better than modern warfare 2, unless the retail sales are huge, i doubt the PC version will sell as much as they predicted.

I played the demo of L4D2 and I wasn't impressed. It just didn't feel right and the new infected weren't all that great.
