GeForce 8800 Ultra launched

Nvidia promises a very powerful but expensive piece of graphical horsepower.
Nvidia says the 8800 Ultra will perform 10-15 percent faster than the 8800 GTX, the company's previous top-end consumer card. It features 768 MB of DDR3 memory and is DX10 compatible, just what you need in time for the release of some supporting games such as Crysis, Age of Conan or the Flight Simulator X update.

If the numbers turn you on, here they are. The GeForce 8800 Ultra sports 128 unified shader pipelines just like the previous top dog, but the card has been overclocked from 575 Mhz to 612 Mhz.. The memory has also been overclocked compared to the GTX too, running at 1080 Mhz rather than 900 Mhz.

"The definitive gaming platform is built around the fastest components available and today there is no disputing those components include the GeForce 8800 Ultra GPU and an Nvidia nForce 680i SLI-ready motherboard," said Ujesh Desai, general manager of desktop GPUs at Nvidia. "The graphics industry evolves extremely quickly and it is quite an achievement when you can leapfrog your own performance milestones in succession like we have done with these GeForce 8 Series GPUs."

All this power doesn't come cheap though and you'll be asked to pay enough for this card as you could spend on a pretty decent PC. The card is yours for €699 (£477).

It's available for pre-order at Overlockers.co.uk for £528. To put that into perspective, I'm driving to Casablanca from Calais in a banger rally in the Summer - the car's total worth is a 1/5th of that.

Insane. Still, I don't see the ATi X2900XT and/or XTX coming close to both its performance and price - I think nVidia are laughing all the way to the bank to be honest...
